Bom Dia Free Rangers,

Most days lately it’s fairly quiet out there, looking at total foot traffic, but the energy seems to be at a low rumble, with frequent explosions… I just got off a packed subway car in unreasonable proximity to 3 maskless people (two of whom were clearly waiting for someone to say something), and a lady spouting incoherent Jesus related babbling. If you’re going to pull that crap on a captive audience at least have the decency to brush up on your scripture and have a point, in which case I’ll gladly hear you out. In separate incidents in the last two weeks, I was twice called [insert racial slur beginning with N here] without a hint of irony, once before I had entered the conversation. We got yet another 1-star online review from someone stating that our wines are great, he had been here several times before, and that he was ignoring our posted signage, which by his own stated facts is mathematically dishonest. If you don’t want to be “spoken to like a child”, Daniel, maybe don’t treat the world around you as if it owes you a debt for having graced it with your presence.… sigh. The dog days are upon us, and people are losing their freakin’ minds. Ricky Gervais measures the quality of his day by the number of dogs he gets to “scruffle”, as do we. So we make the distinction between the dog days of summer (when I sweat through my clothes on the way to the shop) and a good dog day, when we get to hang out with lots of your four legged friends. They really do bring down my blood pressure, and make the world around them a better, furrier place for all.

As most of you know, last Thursday was our first in-store tasting since the Before Times, and it was great to talk and taste with Steve from Greenhook Gin, an old friend and the hardest working man in the gin biz. We are also seeing dangerous spikes in virus infection rates (though fatalities are way down because of the vaccine), and hospitals at capacity around the country, almost exclusively in states won by the Orange Orangutan in the last election, but also in larger cities. Los Angeles has officially re-instated it’s mask mandate for indoor public spaces and businesses, and San Fransisco is gearing up for similar protocol adjustments. We are keeping a close eye, and while we are not as of yet mandating masks again, we certainly understand and respect your choice if you want to wear one. You’re also welcome to order online instead of coming into the shop, for pick-up or delivery, to limit your potential exposure: www.FreeRangeBrooklyn.com

Speaking of which, this Thursday (5-7pm) my old pal, Roy, will be in the shop to pour you FREE tastes of a trio of wines from Maison Noir (by Brooklyn’s own André Hueston Mack): Love Drunk Rosé, OPP Pinot Noir, and Horseshoes & Handgrenades. While our friend, André, will not be in the shop on Thursday, he has one of the sharpest palates I know, is a world class communicator, and you really should check out his recent tasting video on Bon Appétit’s YouTube page: André Explains Wine Label Red Flags. This 22 minute video will make you a savvier wine buyer, guaranteed. If I had ever bothered to grow up, I really would’ve liked to be this guy.

This is one of those weeks where you get FREE in-store tasting AND an online only e-mail sale:

We just received our latest Elijah Craig Free Range Single Barrel Bourbon. It’s a 10 year from the top floor (7th) of Rickhouse P and it’s a delicious, classic American Bourbon. We got lucky on this one, friends and neighbors. It seems the same NYSLA (New York State Liquor Authority) rules that have seen the end of the Four Roses barrel program are currently jamming up our friends at Heaven Hill (Elijah Craig, Larceny, Rittenhouse, McKenna, Evan Williams). Our buddy, Jason, at Heaven Hill says he’ll work on it until there is a viable solution, but for now, this is very likely our last new Free Range Single Barrel from Kentucky for some time. Though more local projects remain in the works.

The new EC FR 10yr just hit the shelf at $49 per bottle, but you can grab ‘em online this week only for $39 per bottle. We also have a limited number of 3 bottle sets including one of the new 10 year plus one each our two different 8 year Elijah Craig FR Bourbon(s) from last year for $99. Click the link(s) below to secure your bottles!

Unrelated, if anybody wants the empty 55 gallon barrel from our Larceny 6yr Bourbon, it’s up for grabs.
