No, not me, Free Rangers,
I’m always here. The nice Jack from Brooklyn, who developed and founded Sorel, a local favorite delightfully spicy hibiscus liqueur, that we proudly carried in its original incarnation, and we were amongst the last in the City to have some in stock when it became unavailable.
More on that shortly, but first, this:
So, I couldn’t sleep the other night and noticed that Blake Edward’s Skin Deep was streaming, which is damned close to a perfect film, and some of John Ritter’s finest work. I was particularly struck by a minor aside: at the end of a great exchange between Ritter’s character and his therapist, he delivers what may be the first ever media use of “see you next Tuesday” (or C U Next Tuesday). This was 1989. I’ve heard the Twelfth Night theory, but that’s hardly the same thing. Those who recall this flick at all only remember the glow in the dark condom scene, which was also a screen first, and structurally incredible that it passed the ratings board uncut (pun intended). If you can get past these gimmicks and all the marshmallowy shoulder pads and comical effects of the hairspray years, it’s a wonderful character piece with some amazingly subtle punchlines (some less subtle), incisive screenwriting, great casting and acting, and enviable editing… and a hilarious cameo roll by the actress who became Zap on American Gladiators. “There is a god, and he’s a gag writer!” Fun stuff. I miss John Ritter.
What were we talking about?
Ah, yes. After an absurd roundabout slow motion cluster-wreck, involving way too many people, pop-ins, and paper, we have achieved what should have never seemed impossible. But the important thing is that Sorel is back on our shelves where it belongs! Sorel was originally launch the year we first opened our doors, and we’re pleased to finally welcome it back. Created by Jackie Summers, Sorel is made with Moroccan hibiscus, Brazilian clove, Indonesian cassia, and Nigerian ginger. It’s delicious on its own, and can be topped with seltzer or Prosecco as a simple spritz or soda, or added as an accent to almost any basic cocktail. Try it in a Mojito instead of simple syrup!
For those of you who weren’t around for the first short but glorious run, and/or want to hear the whole story in Jack(ie)’s own words, there’s a great video on Epicurious. In the Before Time this is the part where we’d host an in-store tasting and offer these lovely bottles at a discount. Sadly we’re still not doing public tastings, but we’re happy to offer you the discount! Click the link below to add a bottle to your cart at the sale price.
