There are aspects of this gig that are shared with bartenders and school teachers that specifically derive from interacting with tides of humans in the same place over time. Here in our 13th year, we’ve had to make good several times on a semi-joking promise of free 21st birthday tastings to the kids of long time neighborhood friends. It seemed so far off when they were slightly awkward tweens. Another kind of place and time thing that might be a little more specific to small business proprietors… … Ya know, before that last delivery arrived, I could see this concept segue into the next paragraph like Neo sees the Matrix, but apparently the synapses that were firing that moment expired in the interim. It seemed so obvious at the time. But a hint of unforeseen grief over a cauldron of white hot frustration with the crumbling structures of the industry around us can apparently cause ghost blips on the radar.
Recently, we had to say goodbye to Carlos, the dog, whose dad has been coming here since year one. I remember almost everything about every single person who came in more than once during those first six months, because there were only about a dozen of you. Kevin the human’s buddy, Carlos the dog, was a tall mellow black (and eventually salt & pepper) doodle-looking friend who moved with the unbothered pace of one who had never known a predator. His snoot was the nearly wolf size, but he accepted cookies so gingerly with only his very front teeth such that one would occasionally hit the floor, which he would take his chill time to retrieve, before chewing slowly and raising his chin for a scratch. He was the Zen-est of creatures, and carried a quiet joy and balance with him everywhere he went. Damn. That was a good dog. … Dog bless us everyone.
