Hello Free Rangers,
There’s nothing like the perspective of distance, and the various views from northern California are starkly different from the tunnel vision of daily grind at street level in our beloved Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. It had escaped me that the land can have shape. And I’m profoundly envious of the breadth of their growing zone and absurd variety of flora that thrive here. I’m struggling to keep alive a Blue Italian Cypress in a barrel in front of the shop. Here, they grow vigorously, swaying like Seussian furry fingers of the Earth, and grow so tall that many are trimmed regularly so as not to overtake power lines above. And roses bloom here almost all year, many the size of your head. In a random front yard in Santa Rosa, I met a cactus the size of a minivan, and wild rosemary the size of a Brooklyn studio seem almost everywhere. There are of course endless rows of glorious vinifera, many amongst the oldest producing vines in the world- like the old gnarled beasts at Ridge’s famed Monte Bello Vineyard to whom I recently paid homage. It’s been way too many moons since I’ve taken a full week away. Big thanks to the crew for stepping up, as they always do. And hopefully all you fine folks have gone easy on them, though it’s been our experience that those who are reading here with us tend to really be with us. Thanks for that.
Now, it seems that our ‘buy this to unlock that’ (rare and sought after Bourbon) sale was at least a little more complicated than most of you were into- or perhaps you just didn’t need any Bourbon. Regardless, this week we’re going the other direction entirely, as it’s wine based and is on anything you want (that we currently have in stock). So, this week’s ONLINE ONLY SALE is a choose your own adventure wine sale that cuts in half our usual case quantity and adds 5% off the usual 12-pack discounts, which looks like this:
15% off ANY 6+ bottles of wine!
20% off 6+ bottles of the same wine!
Discounts should be live now, and will show at check out on the site. But as always, please feel free to reply here (or call the shop) with any questions you might have. Otherwise, have at it!

And this week’s FREE in-store tasting is with our old (Croatian) pal, Dalibor, who is the foremost expert of whom we are aware in town (if not the industry) on Croatian wine, but he now represents a book that is largely Greek. We took this an excuse to fill a long time gap in our permanent collection and picked up several. As Derek spearheaded this Greek-ward expansion- and honestly I still haven’t tasted one of them myself- let’s turn the spotlight to his notes below. Please join us this Thursday, April 23rd (5-7pm), for free tastes of:
Lemnos Lefkus Muscat 2024: A bright, aromatic dry Muscat from the volcanic soils of Lemnos, with lovely citrus and peach notes; an excellent aperitif wine.
Mataroa Nautical Assyrtiko 2024: A vibrant, minimal intervention Assyrtiko farmed from seaside vineyards, with a saline mineral freshness and great texture.
Tyrnavos Dryads Merlot 2021: Fresh and savory Merlot from Mount Olympus, with light tannins and mild acidity, it’s also delicious with a chill.
And for those of you who like the complicated buy to get rare Bourbon sale, that’s still live for this week as well. Even if you’re one of those who already picked up a bottle or two, the limits are reset, and you’re welcome to go back for seconds! To refresh your memory, this sale looks like this:
Spend $100, get 1 bottle Bottle of EH Taylor Small Batch @ $75
Spend $200, get 1 bottle of Blanton’s Bourbon @ $89
Spend $300, get 1 bottle of Four Roses Free Range 12yr Barrel Proof OESF (2020) @ $135
