“I hope that life without a chaperone is what you thought it’d be.
I hope you brother’s El Camino runs forever.
I hope the world sees the same person that you always were to me.
And may all your favorite bands stay together.”        – Dawes

Ya Know Free Rangers,

This one has been up on the shelf for a long while. As another indelible reminder that getting old is not for the faint of heart, it’s been difficult to see this one through. Over the years, so many songs have crept into the consciousness and nestled forever homes amongst the endless clutter. There’s a friend from college, free of spirit, slightly tormented of mind (which is highly relatable), whose lifelong escapism found us running into each other in airports in at least a half dozen cities, in at least four countries over the better part of a decade, and once walking down Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. These moments exist in the vast ether of my wild years which make Frank’s look like that of a Carthusian Monk. Of all our mutual experience, only one or two adventures were ever planned, and no other friend exists with whom I’ve crossed paths in so many foreign places. She also likes to write, and to the best of my knowledge still reads these notes, though we don’t communicate as often as we used to.

Some years in between, during an episode that’s difficult to imagine, but impossible not to empathize with, the hearing in one of her ears slipped into silence completely unprompted and without other symptoms, and slowly that same evening the other ear followed suit. The best of modern medical technology was never able to restore anything greater than distant white noise. The last concert she ever heard was David Crosby. She likes to joke that had she known, she would’ve chosen differently. … So, there’s this great Dawes song whose nostalgic allegory draws up fantastical swirls of life gone by called All Your Favorite Bands. But how do you tell someone that a beautiful, wistful, heart-smooshing song reminds you of her that she’ll likely never hear? I guess like this. Hope that’s cool. Love you, Cat. It’s been too damned long. The next raised glass around these parts will be in your general direction. … Anybody else need a drink?

Now, this week’s FREE in-store tasting is with 5 Sentidos Mezcal, from whom we’ve picked up five expressions. Think of these as a more raw, rough ’n’ tumble, higher proof answer to the line of more refined Amaras that we often showcase. Please join our Cinco de Cinco party this Thursday, August 20th (5-7pm), for FREE tastes of 5 Sentidos Espadin Capón, 5 Sentidos Puntas, 5 Sentidos Arroqueño, 5 Sentidos Pechuga de Mole Poblano, and 5 Sentidos Tobalá. Enjoy 10% off all of the above in-store on tasting day only!

And for those who want another shot at it, our Park/Beach/Porch pack is still live for one more week, which is 20% off a collection of single serving wine, spritzes, and cocktails in can and bottle, for beach/park/porch use. It’s a delightful array of grab ‘n’ goes from Gulp!, Nomadica, Social Hour, Via Corato, Tip Top, and my personal faves: Greenhook G&T, and C. Cassis Spritz. Click on down below and we’ll put together a pack (or three) for ya!
