Damn Free Rangers,
That week kicked my ass. Didn’t really expect to be writing this next note from the emergency room, but here we are. It’s been a rough year for my right hand. This was apostrophized when the terminally handsome ER triage nurse recognized me, and noted how well the skin at the base of the pinky had been stitched. I concurred, and admired his forearm ink, before assessment of the four fresh puncture wounds in the palm and back of my favored paw. One on each side was so deep that the doctor initially thought it was a single through-and-through. It wasn’t, but teeth had hit bone in three places. Luckily, with no fractures or tooth chips left behind visible on the X-ray, it’s mostly a matter of rehab (aka using it as normally as possible) and finishing the antibiotics. The limited use of a right hand is fairly humbling, and mostly behind me, minus the lingering effects of the previous injury. There’s much healing to do still, but at this moment it’s more hurt than injury. Having just barely choked down that last week, infinite thanks go out to Louie the dog (and his kind parents) for taking a specific and deliberate interest in my mental rehab from the incident. That’s a really good dog. And besides, I didn’t wake up in a war zone this morning, and lots of people did. I’ll be at the shop, moving slightly slower than usual, if you need a drink.
Now, this week’s FREE in-store tasting is with the Croatian guy from whom we procure all of our Croatian (and occasionally Slovenian) wine. Dalibor is the foremost expert in NY, and also a damn nice guy who has endless stories about the hands and the land from which such lovely juice originates. Croatia contains some of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, and was leaning natural long before that was the least understood, buzziest word in the industry. Please join us this Thursday, May 22nd (5-7pm), for FREE tastes of a trio of white (and off white) long time staples, and one literal freak of nature: Plavac Mali Sivi 2023, which is a skin contact white made from vines that previously produced red grapes. The resulting wine oddly tastes exactly what that sounds like, a skin contact white with the soul of a fresh natural- lightly tannic- red. Very cool juice indeed. Surprisingly versatile. Please also enjoy 10% off all in-stock Croatian wine in-store on tasting day only!
And the Sale of sales rolls on! If you have not yet checked in, there you’ll find crazy piles of everything from $19 classic Kentucky Bourbon to rare cult CA reds from the cellar. New additions include a trio of Wyoming Whiskey(s), three ciders (2 x NY, 1 x Normandy), and an array of back wall and cellar selections, such as the deep dark Alban Patrina Syrah 2012, the bone dry Rebholz Rosé 2022, the delicious and insanely rare 1986 Forman Cabernet aged to perfection, and the deeply Burgundian- and highly rated- Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Mt Carmel 2007.
