Deep Breaths Free Rangers,

It’s getting weird(er) out there (again). Luckily the booze still works. Speaking of which, it is with great delight and anticipation that we proudly announce the re-opening of our long lost in-store tasting program! Our first tasting back in the game is with our old buddy Steve, the number one at Greenhook Ginsmiths, who has hosted more tastings under our roof than anybody else. This Thursday, 4-6pm, Steve will be in the shop pouring his classic Greenhook American Dry Gin alongside his Old Tom Gin, and Beach Plum Gin Liqueur. All Greenhook products are 10% off Thursday only. Please come back to the shop and have a FREE taste with us!

On the other end of the spectrum, it is with heavy heart that we relay the news that our friend, Cheryl Lins, proprietor and distiller at Delaware Phoenix has passed, suddenly. We were supposed to see her last week, and are deeply saddened that this won’t come to be. Cheryl was a walking encyclopedia of the history and evolution of recipes of every spirit with which she worked, as well as the history of liquor and law in America, and was profoundly generous with her knowledge. I’m not sure our paths ever crossed, no matter how briefly, when I didn’t come away having learned something new. Everything she chose to create and bottle was of the highest intent and execution. Ask any distiller who makes the best absinthe in this country and the vast majority will tell you it was Cheryl, as would I. We’ve lost a true American original, and we’ve raised our glasses of Cheryl’s absinthe and Champagne (a cocktail invented by Hemingway called Death in the Afternoon) to her spirit and her spirits. Cheers, Cheryl. Thank you for everything.

Given that there will never be any more, and that most retailers are already completely sold out, we aren’t offering any discounts, but being the hoarder that I am, we have a larger selection of Delaware Phoenix bottles than anybody else on Earth, which you can view and/or purchase here: Delaware Phoenix Distillery ***Absinthe(s) are limited to 1 per customer, whiskey(s) are limited to 2 per customer.

I am finishing up this e-mail in a car en route to the shop, and the instrumental mix that’s playing just came up with ‘Amazing Grace’ with full orchestra and bagpipes. If I could make this shit up I’d be a better writer.

Since in-store tastings will now be (mostly) weekly, there won’t necessarily be an online only super sale every week, but we are also launching a new Super Sale Page to the Free Range website. There you’ll find some more of those “SKU game” bottles from Empire at (or very near) our cost, as well as products we genuinely dig, but don’t have shelf space to display. Recent additions include Sonoma Distilling Cherrywood Rye, multiple sizes of Old Forester Bourbon, and Templeton Rye (4, 6, and 10 year).
