Hello Free Rangers,
After several rounds with a call center in India, I was forwarded to a call center in this country, who was able to get in touch (but not put me in touch) with the local Brooklyn facility that had thrice attempted delivery prior to our shop’s open hours, which are posted on the door, directly where we found another Fedex door tag. So many people involved and so much time wasted, just so a massive corporation can save a few cents per interaction with each increasingly enraged customer. Most major businesses (and sadly many smaller ones) are operating this way now, which is the natural endpoint of growth models in a finite system. The only way to create more capital after market saturation (or monopoly) is achieved is to strip the infrastructure down to the baseboards, and cut services to customers. Formerly great American companies are just husk facade skyscrapers of empty desks and outsourced services. They need me arguing with some underpaid rep in a call center so that neither of us has the time to think about who is really stealing from us all. … Late stage capitalism is getting me (us all) down.
Now, this week’s FREE in-store tasting will showcase three wines by Maynard James Keenan, front man for the band, Tool. Unlike so many rich guys, Maynard is not paying somebody else to make his wine. It was just something he wanted to do, so he built a vineyard in the middle of the desert, and just shy of a decade in, the wines became something special. His learning curve was pretty sharp, after eclipsing his early mentors and partners, and this is not just some vanity project. Please come taste for yourself. This Thursday, March 13th (5-7pm), please join us for FREE tastes of Merkin Vineyards Chupacabra 2022, Merkin Chupacabra Blanca 2022, and Caduceus Sancha 2019, the last of which is Maynard’s American ode to Spanish red, and it’s freakin’ delicious. Merkin and Caduceus wines are 10% off in store on tasting day only!
Apparently, it’s currently Women’s History month. Generally I’m not an engager in calendrical convention, and often don’t know what day it is here anyway. If it’s a day that ends in ‘day’, I go to work. But when Derek suggested a sale page of a bunch of our favorite female winemakers (and proprietors), it seemed like the thing to do. Speaking of which, if you’re feeling the whole thing of it, please check out the important work of historically significant friend of the shop (and generally awesome human person), Lizz Winstead, and her amazing colleagues at Abortion Access Front (and Feminist Buzzkills Podcast), which you can do here: AAFront!
Regarding the sale page, we would like to make it clear that these are amongst our very favorite wines in quality per dollar, and intent through execution, which just happened to be made by people with ovaries. On this page you’ll find extreme rarities by Oregonians Kelley Fox and Maggie Harrison (Antica Terra, Lillian), as well as value priced everyday drinkers by Corinne Perez of Pierre Sparr and Maryke Botha of Bosman Family Vineyards; genuinely something for everyone. All wines of the sale page are 10% off, or 20% off 6+ bottles.
