Hey Free Rangers,

First, on Turkey Day eve we received a 2-star (no review) Google rating. I wrote a public response which was posted the following evening en route to my folks’ place for wine, turkey, and merriment, and the original rating was deleted apparently before the pecan pie was sliced. This seemed an unacceptably brief life for these decisively effective words, out here in the desert of the real. So, for your amusement, please find below that public reply, names have been redacted to protect the mortified, which is one more favor than they would do for us. You’re welcome.

Hi K*******,

The day before Turkey Day is well known to be one of the busiest days of the year for wine & spirits retail. It seems every year there is one customer whose entitlement shocks even us. This year, K*******, it was you. This you- Operations Manager at P*******, C******* University graduate- yeah?

You asked my team to break the law and then you went on Google with the intent to damage our little business. We’re very sorry for whatever kind of bad day you may have been having, but we are certain that we didn’t cause it, and blaming our customer service for you not having ID on you, like a reasonable responsible adult, is unconscionable. I’m guessing this is why you left a low star rating with no actual review. Tough to get the public on your side when you expected a local small business to risk its liquor license because you didn’t want to walk across the street to get your ID, which you begrudgingly then did and returned to throw a 27 year old tantrum about it. You and I had a perfectly nice interaction over the wine, and then you were quite rude to our team at the counter, which is completely unacceptable.

The general rule is that if the customer doesn’t distinctly appear to be over 35 then ID should be checked (you were wearing a college sweatshirt and have a fairly youthful complexion). And the letter of the law demands that once you have been asked for ID, it is illegal for us to sell to you if you cannot produce a valid driver’s license or other state issued ID, not a picture on your phone (which is profoundly easy to manipulate). This is such basic stuff. A food and wine industry professional like yourself really should know better.

If you plan to shop here ever again, you’ll need to send a written apology to our team. You’re welcome to do that here: info@FreeRangeBrooklyn.com. Otherwise, please feel free to spend your days walking farther to arrive at an inferior shop, where they will also need to see your ID.

And any of you Google review readers who believe that it’s not right to leave a negative review for refusing to sell alcohol to someone without ID, you can tell K******* about that here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/K*******

Happy Turkey Day everybody (even K*******)!
