It takes two turn tables and a microphone. But one turntable mysteriously disappeared at the repair shop I no longer patronize, and the other sits three boxes deep in a Gowanus storage facility (mercifully above the flood plain), likely with a dry cartridge in dire need of replacement. And for my first professional wine dinner (back in the late Cretaceous), the only task and/or object I outsourced was the requisition of a microphone to plug into the standard 1/4” jack on the house hi-fi. I was handed a heavy condenser mic five minutes before show time, and one of the finest winemakers ever to walk god’s green Earth semi-gracefully wrestled feedback all night, in one of the most renown grill joints in NY, in front of some of my favorite living human people. All attending were cool about it. Near the shank of the evening, my dear friend, Jeff, popped a profoundly rare bottle of Giuseppi Quintarelli Recioto Valpolicella. Upon tasting, Sean Thackrey spun sweet nostalgia of his old (late) friend, Giuseppi, before slipping us all into an evening daydream and filling the air with Italian poetry. That was a great night. I give my performance a B, B-. Luckily I was just the host, not the (rock)star (winemaker). While our little shop hoards quite a few of his bottles that survived Sean himself, there is no particular sale on these irreplaceable objet(s) d’art . This is just the story that fell out while my mechanism was preoccupied with move related chaos, and listening to Beck. There’s so much low key magic splintered throughout his body of work between One Foot in the Grave and Sea Change. Though it’s also difficult to imagine what kind of behavior would be required to rub Wayne Coyne that raw; dude seems pretty chill. … Wait, what as the question?
